Why I Built Recent Follow

A few years ago, I was in a relationship where social media became a source of constant anxiety. Not because anything was necessarily wrong, but because the unknown felt worse than the truth. Every new follow, every unfamiliar name in a following list, every late-night scroll through someone else's profile, it all stacked up into something quietly exhausting.

I wasn't proud of the feeling, but I also wasn't alone. I talked to friends who felt the same way. Partners who just wanted to understand what was happening on the accounts they cared about. People who didn't want to snoop or invade anyone's privacy, they just wanted a simple, honest answer to a simple question: who did this person recently follow?

The tools that existed at the time were terrible. Half of them asked for your Instagram password. Others were bloated with ads, pushed shady subscriptions, or flat-out didn't work. Some required you to install suspicious apps that probably harvested more data than they delivered. I tried a few and gave up. I figured there had to be a better way.

So I decided to build it myself.

What Recent Follow Is

Recent Follow started as a personal project. I wanted a tool that could show me a public Instagram account's recent follow activity without requiring a login, without storing any personal data, and without the dark patterns that plague most apps in this space. Just enter a username, get the results, move on with your day.

That core idea hasn't changed. Today, Recent Follow lets anyone look up who a public Instagram account has recently followed, see who follows them, and get a demographic breakdown of that activity. It works on the web with one free search per day, and the mobile app on iOS and Android offers unlimited access for people who need it more often.

We don't ask for your Instagram credentials. We never will. We don't track your searches, build profiles on you, or sell your data. The tool reads publicly available information and presents it in a way that's actually useful.

Why We're Different

Most Instagram tracking tools fall into one of two categories: scams that steal your credentials, or bloated apps that bury the actual feature behind walls of ads and upsells. We've always refused to be either.

We don't ask you to log in with Instagram. We don't automate any actions on your behalf. We don't send follow requests, unfollow people, or interact with anyone's account in any way. We're a read-only tool that surfaces publicly available data. That's a fundamental design decision, not a limitation.

We also don't pretend to offer something we can't deliver. The tool works with public accounts. If an account is private, we can't see their data, and we won't try to. That honesty is part of what makes us trustworthy.
